Film Review - Nimbe
I am that person that enjoys movies that address sensitive topics - racism, discrimination, rape, politics, autobiographies, documentaries, drug and substance abuse. Nimbe falls on the last option.
I had seen a couple of reviews on Facebook praising the movie and how it addressed drugs and I decided I would watch it.
Let me start by saying that I love the storyline. Nollywood is trying these days - any person denouncing that is intentionally being obtuse. The dialogue is somewhat okay - particularly on the parents of Nimbe. It truly does portray the lifestyle of people in the lower class.
Toyin Abraham immerses in her role like a glove (as always). Same with A.K. Of course my best scene is when he killed that stupid ass rapist character - I'm all for rapists lynching any time of the day. Anyone that deals with them does no wrong in my eyes.
And it brings me to certain issues. Maybe it's my personality, but I really don't grab Ralph and his want for attention. Honestly! Maybe I am being shallow but you are in secondary school already - ain't no one gaht time to be cuddling anyone by that age.
Parents aren't abusive (physically or verbally) - they aren't exactly cold either. They are just busy persons. And I say this because I want to be a busy person too. So correct me if I am wrong, but attention is never a reason why someone should just resort to drugs.
Find something else that keeps you busy - make good enough friends, participate in things worthwhile to society with that money. It will even get you the attention you so crave from 2 sides.
1. Your parents would want to associate that their child is making waves et.al
2. Random strangers will look up to you and you'd even get global acclaim if you put such money to good use.
Using drugs as a means of attention - me I no understand oo. Like I said, I might be shallow in that aspect and not understand others emotional capability. Cos someone like me, that is always cooped up alone, I am all the attention that I need, tbvh.
If anyone should have easily succumbed to that want for attention, it should be the Nimbe character cos parents are vile - common characteristics of people of that class.
It still brings us back to parenting - intentional parenting. I know for me, that at this point in my life, I have absolutely low mental capability to be a parent at this age. I will probably be terrible cos I've not learnt tolerance and patience as regards to toddlers.
Many people assume that conceiving is a ticket to good parenting - far from it. Me thinks there should be a psychological school targeted at intentional parenting at this time and age.
Anyways, back to Nimbe - movie is a giant leap at Nollywood beginning to address societal issues of which drug and substance abuse is at the helm and pointing out to possible causes that might spiral one to that direction.
There are some weak points in the movie, but I'm not going there. My interest is the story. Movie is a worthy watch. I give it a 3.5 stars
