Dabbling into History like the Historian that I am. We'll be having a couple of history lessons as scenes, innit? During the Atlantic slave trade period, people were not only captured by the whites right. Some communities/individuals betrayed their clans in exchange for commodities as trifle as mirrors, gin, silk. No be today our people started to take bribes. And so, they really did use the heads of our ancestors to play jokes. This right here is one of those scenes where villages are intruded to capture slaves, at times killing each other. Like we still do these days - fighting against each other as opposed the system relegating us. Oh well, enjoy!

This very short scene is what I call breaking free, yunno. Ascertaining your Independence and being firm while at it. It's not everyone that ever gets to doing this in reality. I imagine that Lucy will have a fallout with dad, but it's necessary to be your own person regardless. And if you don't let it out vocally, you might continue being under parents 'yoke.' Drug and substance abuse... This theme has not exactly been addressed in our entertainment industry but is very much etched in the very core of the society especially among youths. Nigerians no even gree that it is an issue - most downplay the extremity of how drug addiction cripples ones brain and the ability of function normally. Some think it's something you can snap out from. And because there's no addressing of this issue - other than the ole "Don't do drugs." There should be establishments of recovery centers across this country as the youths are getting hinged as the day goes by. I do wish there would be more sensitisation and correction facilities put in place for people battling with drugs and substance abuse.  But better stick to the best method of correction - "Stay away from Drugs" most especially those induced from Peer pressure. You'd hardly control it.

Rape is a despicable act which shamefully is still very much on the increase. And although we've had a lot of outrage, rapists still remain at large. However, as much as the anger on rape thrives on, it doesn't imply that people should false fully accuse another of rape. You are only wronging innocent people. There has been a lot of back and forth going with Izuu in these past week. A new evidence has sprung on the tweets actually being a trigger for his demise - sadly. Rape accusation is as much evil as rape itself. You are Branding another a criminal of such evil act. I do believe there should be penalty for rape accusers too, tbvh. This scene/excerpt is inspired by the recent happening with Izu. May his soul rest in Peace!

Phewwww! I tried to incorporate, broken relationships, domestic abuse, the ineptitude of the police system, the constant drumming of forgiveness, stalking in these few scenes. There's need to explore these themes in the industry: tell those damn stories. May we never experience this in our entire life. I wouldn't wish this paranoia on anyone though. Stay safe people, there are psychopaths roaming about everywhere. Enjoy!

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A TV SERIES AND A MOVIE. I figured I’d share a bit of something with this post. Something the average Nigerian probably doesn't know about films. A TV series is divided into episodes and seasons. It is what Nigerians usually call ‘Seasonal movie’ but that is not the right term. They are TV series because of the allotted times they are aired on channels on screen, it has a definite running time.  Whereas a movie, also called a Feature movie is a one-off movie, running from an hour to about 3 hours. The movies could have follow-ups, like other “parts” with the same characters. There are short movies though (but that's not the focus of this post) To be more specific, a TV series would be something like “Game of Thrones” (had to use that since it is so popular). You know what they say about writers, "don't have a conversation in front of them, they'd use you in their next story. This excerpt is inspired by my visit to the bank. The girl that made the blunder was not like this per se, but what's writing and creativity without conjuring scenarios and making them more elaborate? So I tweaked the scene to be more than what I'd experienced. But for real though, these bankers have patience (especially their marketers and customer care) cos I don't think I have the capacity to endure with certain people and be polite while at their duty. I guess that's why they are paid, innit? Lol...

Exploring the dynamics of the live-in helps that are in many families in this part of the world. In most cases, there is no love lost between the mistress and the help. Only a few are ever close enough, and even at that there exists a subservience in the interactions.  So I shed a little bit of such relationship in the excerpts.

This scene has all shades of Nigerianness in it. I intended to make do with the gradual rise of deception by people to the citizenry. And because most are desperate to get anything during this lockdown and economic crisis, they fall prey. It was inspired by a group of people I met on the road and a message I got to register that a group was giving out money (and they requested for BVN) and I figured to just write an excerpt.  No go and fall prey oo. Coming straight from Nollywood! Honestly, I am a critic of Nollywood... I do feel like the stories are bland, specifically Nollywood African Magic. There's no spice. But as is in the picture, if you are so critical of it, when don't you change it? Get into the Industry and tell the stories that is deserving and boy, is that what I am honing my skills for. There are a lot of stories to be told and sitting back and pointing fingers ain't going to change anything. So, enter the damn industry and make the changes you perceive is better! Capiche...

Shonda Rhimes is an Amazon in the film industry with her popular works, Grey Anatomy, How to get away with murder, and so on. On Researching, I'd like to think that research does not only border around the particular script/theme you want to work on. For aspiring screenwriters (like I am), it starts with researching about scripts which includes reading scripts written by other screenwriters.  I have more of Hollywood scripts and have only accessed Nollywood online. I am ecstatic that I am getting the hang over the screenplays (it comes easy to me, dare I say) but one never stops learning. Thus the researching, it continues. It's a never ending journey if one intends to be a master and by Jove, I do love the idea of that. Like Shona Rhimes said, "Read all the books" and dare I add "Read all the scripts while at it."

Well🤓🤓 This is a proposed conversation between a girl who had a near sexual assault encounter with a therapist she had gone to see. Now, I am not saying that Naija psychologists are this way, nah.. it's just for this particular doctor. And the reason I depicted her as such is because, from the erudite, to the professionals, down to the average Nigerian, some people still have that notion of immediately seeking for specific questions when encounters like this happened.  I wanted to highlight the challenges in the Nigerian society, especially from people who should be trusted. Maybe I'll do another scene with either ministers or parents, cos really these kind of discussions need to be held. And I made the girl to be opinionated because, the new generation women are tired of the same mundane questions. It's blaisé to every girl and we are plain tired of hearing same excuses, period. Screenwriting is not a day's skill and myself have only embarked on this journey. There are gazillions of stories to tell, and as someone who is very critical of the content of Nollywood screen, especially the very small screens that the average African families watch daily. Though the Neo-Nollywood have begun exerting some changes that we see on the small screen, majority of the stories are still far from being 'it' and the Industry is big enough to accommodate as much people as possible cos let's face it, "there are lots and lots of stories to tell." So in subsequent posts, I'd be sharing screenwriting tips from Veterans in the filmmaking industry, albeit Hollywood. These are the participants in the dialogue of a script. It could be between the protagonist and the antagonist, or a love interest. Even, it could be with random characters in the scene.  The character cues specifies the actors that are making the dialogues and so, it is essential that the cues are indicated at every turn. Unlike fiction writing where the character cues are not indicated in some dialogues, it is a must for the script, so you wouldn’t burden anyone into deciphering the person that has a particular dialogue.  In this scene, there are three characters. Two which are named are obviously major characters in the assumed script, and the other is a random character and so it is not necessary to name him.  The writing of the characters, random or not should be capitalised in all cases. So you should have, ‘TOLU,’ ‘UCHE,’ ‘IDEM’ not ‘Tolu,’ ‘Uche,’ or ‘Idem.’ They should be in the Upper Case Alphabet lettering For cases like the random chara...

The scene heading is commonly referred to as the slug line, basically the setting of the story which includes the location and the time of the day. It is essential that the slug line is specified so that the location team can set up the structure for that particular scene. The scene heading appears like the various excerpts above and the rule is that all of the letters must be capitalised. The INT. signifies INTERIOR, this means that the setting of the scene is the inside of a structure, same way the EXT. (EXTERIOR) signifies the scene being outside of the spot. The next is the particular location, could be an establishment, a mall, a restaurant, bar, house, just anywhere. Just endeavour that it is indicated in the Slug line. You can also juxta-pose both the INT. and the EXT. when the scenes happens at the exact location and both in the exterior and interior. So it comes off as indicated above. Every industry have some certain rules to follow and in the art of formatting the screenplay. For the scripts, it is largely or courier new, the type writing font style with a 12 font size. The line spacing is a one line spacing, unless you are indicating a break from action to character names, to dialogues.  An average script have this format Scene headings: This indicates the location and time of the scenes Action lines: This is what transpires in each scene Characters: The people on-screen at the scene Dialogue: The choice of words spoken by the characters Parentheticals: The emotions of the characters in the dialogue Each of the above format have their specific margins they should have on the script.
