You know what books does to you?
It takes you to the ghetto of South Africa and the similarities between them and the African American especially during the apartheid/discrimination period
To baskin' in da Creole of the African American
To meking yuhsef understand di patois of ah Jamaican
To the struggle and persistence of the Nigerian person
It makes you understand Ayiti (Haiti) and the stereotype of a third world country
Of White supremacy and racism... The sheer fact that the actions were so brutal, the degradation of a person just because of the colour of their skin. Totally inconsiderate to humanity in a bid to assert dominance.
Of history and human wickedness... History in the literal sense and the other where you are trying to draw a link between the nobles romantic stories you've read and the knowledge you already have that they made use of your race as slaves for many centuries.
Of codependency and addiction... Drugs, Pills, domestic abuse. Getting worked up over a character refusing to give them up but understanding why they make the choices they do.
You're enriched with knowledge of an alternate universe and a subtle wish to exist in such world... Sci-fi, Paranormal, neorealism fiction.
Of love, lust and all there's in-between... Swooning over a character though your sixth sense reminds you ain't real but you don't care anyways
Of family... The love-hate relationship and the dynamism that comes with family.
Of angst, bitterness, sadness and vengeance...
Of loss and death... Giving up and holding on... Sickness, accident and how it affects the psyche. How people never really remain the same after certain tragedy
Of legal, suspense and thriller... You suddenly see yourself in court before the jury. Rooting for the bad guy and being lost in suspense. Deliberately delaying so as not to get to the climax of the novel and the final page of them books.
The emotional wreck of having completed a work and you are lost in thoughts with the characters like, 'Okay, what happens next?'
What?
What?
What...
On memoirs, autobiographies, biographies, experiments, notions and all of that.
For homebodies like me, travelling and glimpsing into all of these works of art from the comfort of indoors is one the best things that have happened to my person, periodt...
P.S: I was in the middle of a Haitian collection of short stories and I took a break to update this random musing.
