Notions (BBN)
I used to critical of BBN (I still am, to an extent) but let's face it, which other incentive in this whole country makes people celebrity over the course of few weeks?
See Laycon for instance, who knew about his madtt rap skills prior to BBN? And whether or not he wins - he is getting signed into a label. Even if he doesn't, he will always have fans. He won't ever be relatively unknown again, dazzol.
Which other initiative gives a prize worth 85 million?
It's not Big Brother that's the problem of Nigeria, it's just that there aren't enough programs with an enticing reward as the show.
None!
And it's not about the morality of the show. People will always tune in when there is a nice catch. Take "Who Wants to be A Millionaire" for instance. Were tons of people not watching it then?
Wasn't it educative?
Wasn't the catch prize also good enough?
And weren't people expectant of the next episode every week?
Let's pretend that we only want talents shows and education shows. What is in for the winners in most cases? Do any come remotely close to how BBN pushes people into the limelight?
Even the Project Game and Nigeria's Got Talent had gone into oblivion. And many other supposedly educative contents have very miniscule reward.
So nah, it's not about the show. It's about the prize attached to the show. Start a talent hunt and attach that kind of sum and tell me why it won't have a large viewership.
Don't hate the game - the organisers know what's in it for them and they are reaping every reward therein. You either sit out (like I'm doing) or begin planning for a show that would rival BBN. Until then, the show will keep having many people glued like moth to flame. Onkaynnn!
